UK Ready to Employ Frozen Russia's Assets to Support Ukraine's War Effort
The United Kingdom is ready to advance with using the full worth of frozen Russia's assets to support the Ukrainian military campaign, Leader Sir Keir Starmer has stated.
In a collective announcement, the leaders of the UK, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany asserted that this joint measure would heighten pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and urge Moscow to come to the table.
They clarified that the move would be executed in strong partnership with the America.
UK restrictions have blocked over £25bn of Russian assets since Russia launched its full-scale invasion against the Ukrainian nation in 2022. Yet, until now, resources allocated to Ukraine using Russia's assets had only been sourced from earnings and returns generated on them.
Sir Keir assured Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky that the United Kingdom, France, and Germany were in agreement in their aim to push forward toward employing the full value of the seized Moscow's national funds to end the war.
He stated that further measures in the coming days and weeks would apply more pressure on Russia.
This statement comes after EU representatives convened in the Danish capital last week to discuss utilizing frozen Russia's holdings for a €140bn credit to Ukraine.
Last month, US President Donald Trump urged G7 allies to confiscate or utilize seized Russian assets, based on news outlets.
The worth of frozen Russian assets in the Europe is estimated to be almost €211bn.
President Zelensky calls on the United Kingdom's Sir Keir Starmer to participate in the PURL programme
The Russian government carried out widespread missile and drone strikes throughout the Ukrainian territory on that day, resulting in electricity outages in many areas of Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, and eight other regions.
Several persons were fatally injured and no fewer than 20 people were wounded in the attack, authorities in Ukraine said.
In a post on X following the strike, Zelensky stated that the premeditated assault focused on public and utility structures.
"What is required is not empty words but firm measures - from the US, Europe, and the G7 - in delivering anti-aircraft weapons and enforcing sanctions," he wrote.
"All penalty impositions diminishes Moscow's military apparatus," Zelensky wrote, in a different message.
Also on Friday, Zelensky stated to the press he would encourage Sir Keir to participate in the Purl programme, under which alliance members buy military equipment from the US to donate to Ukraine.
While applauding the United Kingdom's firm backing for Ukraine, he remarked it should indicate firmly that it would engage in the initiative, as well as apply further measures on the Russian Federation.
